Adoption Application FAQ's

Thank you for your interest in adopting from National Newfoundland Rescue!

We’re a 100% volunteer-run organization, and our application process is designed to find the best match for both our dogs and our adopters. Please know that our process takes time—currently 3–4 weeks—because we’re committed to making forever matches. Our return rate is less than 1%, and we’re proud of that!

Step 1: Submit an Application

We recommend submitting a general application even if you don’t see a specific dog listed. This helps us get to know you and begin the process so you’re ready when the right match comes along.

Please do not submit multiple applications. If you’re interested in another dog later, just update your original application.

Step 2: Preliminary Review

While you wait to be assigned to an application coordinator, another volunteer will begin verifying key information:

  • Home Ownership/Rental – If renting, we may need your lease or landlord confirmation.
  • Pet Limits – We check your county’s pet regulations.
  • Veterinary Records – We confirm your pets are up to date on vaccines, flea/tick and heartworm prevention, and annual testing. Be sure your vet is authorized to speak with us.

Incomplete or missing info can delay your application, so help us keep things moving!

Step 3: Screening & Interview

When an application coordinator becomes available, they’ll reach out via text, email, or phone to schedule a pre-screen interview. Then, they’ll:

  • Contact your personal references
  • Schedule a virtual home visit with everyone in your household

This part of the process helps us get to know you better and clarify anything from your application.

Step 4: Application Approval

Once approved, you’ll start receiving direct emails about dogs that are available or nearing availability.

If a dog interests you, just reply to let us know! If you’re a potential match, the placement team may schedule an interview focused on that dog.

How We Match Dogs to Homes

Each dog is evaluated in foster care by a team of volunteers who track their:

  • Personality and behavior
  • Medical needs
  • Preferences for other pets, people, and lifestyles

Some dogs need a dog companion, others prefer being the only pet. Some are fine with cats, while others have a high prey drive. Travel distance is also a factor—we want our dogs to arrive in their new homes happy and confident, so proximity matters.

We consider all these factors when reviewing applicants. Interviews are not guaranteed for every dog because not every home is the right match—but we promise every placement decision is made in the dog’s best interest.

Post-Adoption Support

All adopters receive 30 days of free support from a certified dog trainer to help your new dog adjust and set you up for success.

We know the process takes time—but we want every placement to be the right one. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
